Amrita Marian
Karunaratne
She attended the Cora Abraham's Art classes in Colombo to follow a course in
painting. In 1989 she left to study ceramic design at the National College of
Art and Design in Dublin, Ireland. In 1991 she received her Bachelor of
Design from the Irish National Council for Educational Awards.
Since 1997
she lives and works in her own studio in Hoorn, the Netherlands.
Her
thrown vessels are simple and bulbous in form. She applies a fine slip called
terrasigillata on the surfaces of these forms. This is to emphasize the rich
variety of colours and it's fine satin finish of terrasigillata. All the
vessels are sagger fired. She uses a variety of organic materials such as
wood shavings and sawdust in her sagger firings.
